Policies & Procedures

At Nevada Union Dance Community, we strive to cultivate a learning environment rooted in focus, respect, artistry, discipline, curiosity, and care for the whole dancer. We ask all students and families to carefully review the following policies prior to participation in classes, programs, workshops, camps, rehearsals, and performances.

Program Orientation & Communication

Some programs may include an orientation, parent meeting, or welcome communication prior to the start of participation. Families are encouraged to review all program information carefully, including schedules, studio locations, arrival and pick-up procedures, and any program-specific expectations.

Attendance & Punctuality

Students are encouraged to attend all scheduled classes, rehearsals, and program activities and to arrive on time, prepared, and ready to begin. Regular attendance is an important part of progressive dance training, supporting individual growth, safe physical development, and continuity of learning.

For dancers participating in productions, regular attendance is also a condition of maintaining assigned roles. Dancers must maintain a minimum 85% attendance rate in all required classes throughout the production period.

If a dancer’s attendance falls below 85%, their participation and casting may be reviewed. Depending on the circumstances, this may include modification or reassignment of roles, removal from specific choreography, or inability to perform.

Absence Communication

If a dancer will be absent or late to class or rehearsal for any reason, please notify the school by email as soon as possible. This allows us to maintain accurate attendance records and ensure that relevant information is communicated to all faculty working with the dancer.

Whenever possible, please communicate planned absences in advance. For illness or other unexpected circumstances, please email the school as soon as you know the dancer will be unable to attend.

If an injury or illness affects a dancer’s ability to participate fully but they are still able to attend safely, please let us know by email as well. Observing class or rehearsal is encouraged when appropriate, particularly when new material or choreography is being taught.

Illness, Injury & Modified Participation

Illness, Injury & Modified ParticipationThe health and safety of our dancers, faculty, and families is a shared responsibility. We ask families to use thoughtful judgment about when a dancer should stay home and to communicate with the school about illness, injury, or physical limitations that may affect participation.

Illness

Dancers should stay home when they are actively ill or may be contagious, including when experiencing fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or persistent or significant respiratory symptoms. Dancers should be well enough to participate comfortably and safely before returning to class.

When a dancer is well enough to attend but not well enough for full physical participation, observing class or rehearsal is encouraged when appropriate. Observation allows dancers to continue learning choreography, corrections, musicality, and new material while giving the body additional time to recover.

Please notify the school by email of illness-related absences or any illness that will require modified participation, as outlined in our Attendance & Punctuality policy.

Injury

Dancers should never feel expected to dance through an injury. Injuries, pain, or physical limitations that may affect participation should be communicated to the school by email so that relevant information can be shared with the dancer’s teaching staff. Dancers should also inform their instructor at the beginning of each class or rehearsal of any current injury or limitation.

If a dancer has been evaluated by a physician, physical therapist, or other healthcare provider, families should share any relevant recommendations, restrictions, or return-to-dance guidance with the school.

Depending on the injury and the guidance provided, dancers may participate in a modified capacity or observe class or rehearsal. When it is safe and reasonable to attend, continued presence is encouraged so dancers can keep up with choreography and class material while respecting the needs of the injury.

For injuries requiring ongoing modification or follow-up, families may be asked to complete an Injury Information Form. This allows our faculty physical therapist and teaching staff to understand the nature of the injury, coordinate appropriate modifications within the scope of dance instruction, and support a thoughtful return to full participation.

Participation may be modified or restricted when necessary for the dancer’s safety, even when a dancer feels able to continue.

Arrival & Pick-Up

Students should be dropped off and picked up promptly at the scheduled start and end times of their classes or program activities. Dancers are expected to remain within approved program areas during breaks and between classes unless otherwise authorized.

Dress Code

Students are expected to follow the dress code established for their class or program and arrive prepared with all required dancewear, shoes, and supplies. Hair should be neatly secured away from the face for all movement classes.

Please review any program-specific Dress Code information prior to participation.

Food, Hydration & Wellness

Students should bring a clearly labeled water bottle and any snacks or meals needed for the duration of their participation. We encourage dancers to support their physical well-being through hydration, nourishment, rest, and attentive care for their bodies.

Please notify the program of any allergies, injuries, medical conditions, or other concerns that may impact participation. If this information has already been provided through registration materials, no additional notification is necessary unless circumstances change.

Studio Conduct

We strive to create a learning environment that is focused, respectful, welcoming, and supportive for all members of our community. Students are expected to conduct themselves in ways that contribute positively to this shared environment.

The following are not permitted:

  • Smoking, vaping, alcohol, or drug use
  • Disruptive, unsafe, or inappropriate behavior
  • Gum chewing during classes
  • Behavior that interferes with the safety, well-being, or learning of others

Nevada Union Dance Community reserves the right to dismiss a student from a class, program, rehearsal, workshop, camp, or event if conduct significantly disrupts the learning environment or compromises safety.

Classroom Etiquette

Our studios are shared spaces for learning, creativity, focused work, and mutual respect. Students are expected to contribute to an environment in which everyone can learn and dance safely.

  • Arrive on time and ready for class. Please allow enough time to change, use the restroom, put away belongings, and be prepared to begin when class starts.
  • Enter and leave the studio respectfully. If arriving late, wait quietly for the instructor’s acknowledgment before joining class.
  • Listen while the instructor is teaching or giving corrections. Talking with classmates should be kept to appropriate moments and should not interrupt instruction.
  • Stay engaged in the work of the class. Dancers should participate fully, remain attentive, and make a sincere effort even when material is challenging or unfamiliar.
  • Receive corrections with openness and curiosity. Corrections are an important part of dance training and may be given individually or to the class as a whole. Dancers are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions when clarification is needed.
  • Be respectful of other dancers’ learning. Allow others space to work, avoid distracting behavior, and refrain from commenting negatively on another dancer’s body, ability, placement, or progress.
  • Practice kindness and professionalism. Bullying, teasing, exclusionary behavior, or disrespectful communication toward another student, instructor, accompanist, staff member, or guest is not acceptable.
  • Use studio space and equipment with care. Barres, mirrors, floors, props, costumes, and other studio materials should be treated respectfully and returned to their proper place after use.
  • Keep personal belongings organized and outside the dancing area. Water bottles and other permitted items should be kept in designated locations.
  • Phones and personal devices should be silenced and put away during class unless their use has been specifically approved by the instructor.
  • Food, gum, and beverages other than water should remain outside the studio.
  • Ask permission before photographing or recording during class or rehearsal. Images or recordings of other dancers should not be shared without appropriate permission.
  • Support one another. We value a studio culture in which dancers can take risks, make mistakes, ask questions, work hard, and celebrate one another’s growth.
Parent & Family Communication

We value open, respectful, and collaborative communication with students and families. Questions, concerns, and feedback are always welcome and help us continue building a strong and supportive community.

If concerns arise, we encourage families to communicate directly with program administration so that issues can be addressed thoughtfully, respectfully, and in a timely manner.

We ask all members of our community to engage with one another in a spirit of kindness, professionalism, curiosity, and mutual respect.

Personal Belongings

Please label all personal belongings clearly. While we will do our best to help locate misplaced items, Nevada Union Dance Community is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged belongings.
